REVIEW: L'Oreal Lash Out Butterfly Effect Mascara

Hi everyone,

This is a review on a L'Oreal mascara that came out at the end of last year that I've been using for almost a month. The L'Oreal Lash Out Voluminous Butterfly Effect Mascara ($8.99) is suppose to provide the lashes with a bold effect. The brush is winged-shape and is supposed to grab onto your lashes and extend them out to the "outer corner of the eyes," according to the L'Oreal website. The formula in this tube of mascara is supposed to give the lashes 6x the volume and provide a dramatic "butterfly effect" eye look.

I've definitely never seen a brush like this before where there's one side that is created with short bristles and the other side with plastic bristles gradually increasing in length to give it a curved look.

I would consider this an "ok" mascara after using it for a month. It tends to pick up a lot of product at the intersection between the brush and the wand which is unforgiving to the lashes. A lot of product on the brush will give the lashes a lot of clump that will make them look "spidery."

You can see here that I am not wearing any mascara, and that my eye lashes tend to grow out.

One coat of mascara on the top lash. The larger side of the brush was used.

Two coats applied to the top lash. Notice how my lashes appear clumpy and thick. The maximum coats I  apply when I use this mascara is only two due to this reason.

The other side of the brush has smaller bristles that I only used to apply one coat on the lower lash.

PROS
  • This mascara seems to lengthen my lashes, but definitely not 6X unless more coats are applied.
  • The mascara is easy to use, although you have to get used to its unusual shape. I like that it has plastic bristles since it can really get into the roots and coat it.
CONS
  • It is difficult to hold and use the brush since it has a particular shape. You definitely have to adjust your arms and hands in order to get the brush on the other side. The longer and "butterfly" side of the brush is supposed to go to the outer side of the lashes.
  • It tends to clump at the longer side of the brush which transfers to the lashes and make them look clumpy.
Overall, this mascara works alright. I wouldn't buy it again since it's difficult to use and doesn't provide me great looking lashes.

Monthly Favorites: January!

It's Monthly Favorites time! Can you believe that January is already over? Makes me a little sad, but also very excited about the future!  Below you can see my favorite beauty products for the month! Read on to learn more!

Every girl and guy needs to have lip balm! I've been using eos for a while now, and this past month I've been trying out the pomegranate raspberry flavor which has an underlying sweet scent. I like eos lip balms not only for their cute egg shape, but for the easy application on the lips. Many lip balms that are created to provide moisture tend to have a very thick texture that won't allow you to put lipgloss or lipstick over it, but eos is thin enough to provide that hydration for the lips yet allow you to wear some color. You can purchase this at any super center or drugstore for $2.99-$3.49.

Speaking of lips, I've been loving the Lush Santa's Lip Scrub from the holiday collection. I purchased this after the holidays where every holiday item was BOGO free. This is cola flavored and smells extremely sweet and good! It is basically sugar with red dye and some essential oils. This scrub does a great job at exfoliating my lips and making them prepped and ready for lipstick to glide easily on.

I have several NYX Rouge Cream Blushes, and this one is the one that I've been using and loving recently. "Glow" is a gorgeous pinky mauvey shimmerless blush. Not a lot is needed and pigmentation is great. It's best to use a small stipple brush to apply this blush. This blush is definitely buildable and won't go wasting away since a little goes a long way! $6.99 at Ulta.

The Maybelline Great Lash Clear Mascara ($5.99) is perfect for grooming the brows. The Anastasia Beverly Hills Clear Brow Gel is great, but it's too expensive for my wallet, and so this Great Lash mascara is a great alternative. It doesn't harden your brows, and it doesn't leave a weird shine which I appreciate! Try this out for your brows if you're looking for something inexpensive!

The Buffing Brush is one of my favorite brushes of all time. This is part of the Real Techniques Core Collection Brush Set ($17.99) that I purchased from Ulta a while back. I love this brush so much because it does a great job at blending out my face foundation or BB cream. I also use this to apply my powder and with this brush you won't have to worry about streak marks on your face!

I did a review on this Paris Amour $12.95 lotion in which you can read HERE, and I just love this lotion so much. It smells like love and romance! Enough said!

The Naked 3 palette $52.00  is so pretty, and I've been using this ever since I received it as a gift from my sister for the holiday. I love the rose-y and pink-y colors. These colors are super easy to blend, and are perfect for my skin tone. Pigmentation is great, and I have nothing bad to really say about this. Read my full review on this palette HERE.

What are your favorite beauty products this month?!

Deborah Lippmann Nail Lacquers - $6.99!

I posted last year on how there are Deborah Lippmann Nail Lacquers on BeautyBrands.com on sale for under $10, and now it looks like they've done a deeper discount on whatever is left, so visit the website whenever you can and buy what you can get! Shipping is free with any $50 purchase or more.

Target Tuesday - Mini Haul!

Happy Tuesday everyone! Lots of food deals going on right now at Target in preparation for Super Bowl Sunday, so check out the ad HERE if you are interested. I went to Target last Friday while I was in Santa Ana, and I picked up only a few things that aren't relevant at all to the Super Bowl. Every time I'm waiting around for something I tend to go to Target and waste time there.

There are still lots of holiday gift sets at Target that have finally hit 70% off. I've seen Taylor Swift perfume sets, e.l.f. makeup sets, Pacifica Natural Skincare sets, and other sets on clearance for 70% off. I've also seen jewelry from the fall season, home decor, candles and lots of shoes at 70% as well. Be sure to hit up your local Target soon if you're interested before they're all sold out!

I found this throw pillow for $3.74 (85% off)! I love it!

I saw a lot of shoes on clearance including these cute tan loafer-type shoes. I found these in grey as well, but felt that this color is better. These are super comfy with extra padding on the inside! It was only $7.48 too!

Last but not least I found this Pacifica Natural Skincare Body Butter Trio for $4.48!

As you can see, I got lots of great deals for a great price! Be sure to check out Target! :)

LUSH - Selected Holiday BOGO Free Items Still Available!

If you missed the great holiday BOGO free deals from LUSH last year the day after Christmas, you may still have a chance to get a very limited supply of some stuff left over on the website.

This is what's left as when I last checked. Click on photo to enlarge. I did buy a few things including two Noriko soaps and two Father Christmas bath bombs. Standard shipping is $6.00. I suggest ordering soon before they're all gone!

What's in my beauty travel bag?!

Hi everyone! It's almost Friday, and I'm super excited because I'm headed to Big Bear tomorrow to have some fun with friends for the weekend! I admit that I don't enjoy packing , but I feel very prepared for the trip! I packed my beauty travel bag and thought I'd share with you what I'm bringing with me to the slopes! This beauty bag only contains my cosmetics, and I have a separate bag for my other personal care items in case you're wondering!

My cosmetics travel bag is this adorable Harajuku Lovers bag that a friend got for me as a gift several years ago when I was in college!

It's no longer sold at Sephora, but I'm sure you can find similar beauty bags. This bag is like a tri-fold where it opens up, and there's three compartments.

Face makeup! I'm bringing my Revlon Colorstay Pressed Powder, Almay Smart Shade foundation and concealer. I tend not to like wearing a full coverage face when I travel.

Next compartment contains mainly my eye and lip products. I have the:
e.l.f. eyelid primer
Sephora Ultra Vinyl Lip Crayon in "Gorgeous Peach" (Discontinued)
NYC Browser Kit, Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment SPF 15

And in the last compartment I have five brushes including four Real Techniques brushes (crease, base shadow, brow, and buffing) and one SUSU brush for blush.

It's almost Friday, so yay for the weekend! :) Have a great one everyone!

REVIEW: Milani Eye Tech Bold Liquid Eye Liner

The Milani Eye Tech Bold Liquid Eye Liner ($7.49) is a "new" product that I've been liking. The packaging states that it's new, but it really isn't since it's been out for almost a year or so. I've been using the Jesse's Girl Liquid Eyeliner which I reviewed HERE in the past, but I decided to pull out a new eyeliner from my extra makeup stash to try out something new. The Jesse's Girl eyeliner has a very thin felt tip that allows you to make small strokes and have precision, but even sometimes using a precision type eyeliner won't give you the perfect winged look especially if your hands or arms are shaky! The Milani Eye Tech Bold is designed to help you create the perfect wing eyeliner look since it is designed with a larger tip.

This liquid liner is is a felt tip that is large and thick. It reminds me of a color marker since the packaging and tip are alike! Milani states that this eyeliner will help you create a variety of dramatic winged looks using one stroke. Personally I'm not that great with using eyeliners, especially to create a winged look, so I need more than one stroke to make at least a decent or "good" looking winged look.

What I like to do is place the liner gently at the outer corner of my eye and slowly and gently bring it down as far as I can towards my lash line. Afterwards I take the liner and do my best to fill in the gaps.

You can watch the video below to see how I applied my liner.

PROS:
- A great thing about large felt tips is that they are generally pigmented.
- It does make drawing a winged eye easier.
- Time saving!

CONS:
- The felt tip is pretty rigid and stiff, and therefore it can tug at your skin. You have to be very careful and gentle when using it.
- Definitely more than one stroke is needed. Don't be afraid to use multiple strokes!

Overall I really do like this eyeliner, and I recommend it to those who are beginners at winged eyeliner looks or to anyone who has trouble creating them!

Happy ManiMonday and Happy Martin Luther King Jr.Day!  I'm wearing orangey coral nails today, but my nails look horrible, so enjoy this photo instead of Color Club's "Angel's Kiss" that I wore a few weeks ago! So late, but I love this polish! Easy application, and a beautiful color/effect! Who else likes holographic nail effects?! Haha

Favorite Skincare Products!

How's everyone's resolutions coming along? It's definitely hard to be in the "get fit, get healthy" mindset for me personally right now, but everything is a work in progress! I'm trying to take better care of myself including my skin, and I figured that I would share with you my favorite skin care products in case some of them may work for you! First, my skincare type is considered normal/dry, but I do have sensitive skin; I grew up with eczema with flares every so now and then, and I also have chronic idiopathic urticaria (unknown cause of hives). Second, I want to say that all the products that I recommend in this post could work for any skin type, and that just because I have sensitive skin or dry skin doesn't mean these won't work for you. I've tried many skincare products, and I'm slowly trying to find out what works best for me, and so far the following below has in some way.

  • Tarte Pure Maracuja Oil ($46) - This stuff is amazing. According to the website, this 100% pure maracuja oil contains vitamin C and essential fatty acids that is supposed to hydrate your skin, make it smoother, firmer, brighter and won't cause your face to break out. I was hesitant to buy this at first, but I read the reviews and everyone was raving about it. With my really dry skin causing me to get aggravated, I picked up a bottle at Ulta to try it. My skin has definitely improved over time and use, but I do believe that it's due to a combination of things including drinking more water. My skin looks healthier and feels much smoother than it was before. I love this product because my skin feels very hydrated in the morning when I wake up when typically it would be dry and sometimes flaky. Ew. It is oil, so to me it does feel greasy as you rub it on, but only two to three drops of the oil is needed. It absorbs quickly into the skin, and the oil greasy feeling is gone. I have heard that this works well for people with oily/combination skin too, but of course I can only speak from my perspective. Kudos to Tarte for this oil!
  • Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion ($8.99) - My holy grail. One of my saving grace brands since I was a kid. No joke. Can you imagine me as a kid screaming my head off because my dry nasty eczema caused me to itch like crazy? Yeah, my parents didn't know what to do with me, but my pediatrician recommended my parents to use the Aveeno Eczema Bath Treatment with oatmeal extracts to relieve the itchiness, and boy did it do wonders for my skin! I'm still a long time user of Aveeno with their Daily Moisturizing Lotion that contains oatmeal ingredients and is fragrance free. This lotion is my favorite over the counter non-scented lotion because it makes my skin feel alive instead of looking and feeling like a desert! This lotion moisturizes my body very well and does a great job at relieving itchy areas on my skin. Aveeno does create lotion for babies and for sensitive types, but I don't use the sensitive skin lotion by Aveeno because I've never had problems using their regular Daily Moisturizing Lotion. This is a great, great lotion!
  • Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Hand Cream ($4.99) -  It's an natural thing for me to use my Aveeno lotion to moisturize my hands, but I discovered this Neutrogena hand cream from my sister that specifically attacks the dryness in your hands. My sister is a nurse, so she constantly washes her hands which makes her hands even drier. She told me this cream works well at smoothing out her skin and keeping it hydrated. I gave it a try, and I fell in love with it instantly. The bottle is only 2 ounces which isn't a lot, but the amazing thing is that you only need a small dab of it to take care both your hands. Unlike the Aveeno lotion, this hand cream has a thicker greasy-like texture similar to petroleum jelly. It's a clear jelly that comes out and I use both hands to rotate my hands in order to spread it around. The cream will settle into all the tiny lines in your skin and you automatically feel a difference in your hands. My hands feel so smooth and soft like a baby's skin each time that I use this. Give this a try if you're someone who uses their hands a lot and or has very dry uncomfortable skin.
  • Queen Helene Mint Julep Masque ($3.99) - I was introduced to this product from a friend of mine who gave this a try for the first time, and she told me it shrank her pores. That's pretty cool, I thought, but I naturally do not have large pores. I wanted to give this a try anyway since I do have acne pimples sometimes, and the idea of wearing a green mask for 15 minutes was fun. For $4, this sucker is supposed to dry up your acne pimples, shrink pores, and get rid of blackheads. All that I noticed from using this product once a week was that my skin felt ultra clean after using it. My skin looked clean and felt clean, but I did feel as if this product dried out my skin a little more.
  • Lumene Anti-wrinkle Night Cream (Similar HERE $29.99) - I started using this product before I used the Tarte Maracuja Oil. Funny thing is that this product was recommended for people who are 50 years old and older, and well, I'm not even 25 years old yet. It's never too young to start taking care of your skin though, and I found this on clearance at CVS, so I picked it up because it had anti-aging ingredients in it and some special arctic cloudberries that are supposed to make your skin look and feel younger and radiant. I used this every single night, and occasionally I still do whenever I don't use the Maracuja Oil, and the texture of the cream itself is super smooth and especially creamy! There's no thickness to it although the cream looks thick inside the pot, but if I could get maracuja oil to be of this texture and fragrance (lightly scented) then it would be perfect. It absorbs so quickly into my skin, and I notice my face texture becomes very smooth and soft.
  • Yes to Grapefruit Correct & Repair Daily Facial Scrub ($9.99) - This facial scrub makes my face feel super clean, and makes me look more brighter and awake. This grapefruit smelling scrub comes with tiny beads that helps exfoliate your skin. I just love this product because I feel so fresh and so clean clean! I always feel as if I look very pale after every use, but I do not use this every day since I don't want to overdo it on exfoliating. This is definitely a wake me upper product, and I do not experience any weird photosensitivity reaction when I'm in sunlight which is a good thing, because normally my eyes water like crazy with citrus cleansers!
  • Facial Masks ($1-$3) - I love using facial masks that are made in Korea. Not all masks are the same since they use some different ingredients for different targets for the skin. They're very easy to use since you take it out of the pouch and put it on your face for 15 minutes. I notice with every mask that I use my face ends up feeling like a baby's skin. Likewise with the facial scrub, I feel very refreshed with these masks. These masks also provide a lot of moisture as well. You can buy these at the Korean markets, and I've also seen them at Big Lots under the "Epielle" brand.
That is pretty much it for my skincare favorites! What are your favorite skincare products? I always like trying out new ones!
